We’ve all been there. You meet someone interesting at an event, in a group chat, or through work, and they ask for your WhatsApp. The hesitation kicks in — *do I really want to give out my personal phone number?* Phone numbers feel private. Once shared, they’re out there forever, and you can’t easily take them back.
That’s exactly why WhatsApp is rolling out a much-needed feature: usernames.
What Are WhatsApp Usernames?
Instead of always relying on your phone number to connect with people, you’ll soon be able to create and share a simple username (like @campusconnectug).
People will be able to message you directly using just that username — no phone number required. It’s cleaner, safer, and gives you more control over your privacy.
You Can Reserve Your Username Right Now
The full feature is launching later this year, but starting this week, you can go ahead and reserve the username you want. This is smart because popular names will get claimed quickly — first come, first served.
Here’s how to reserve yours (super easy):
1. Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed.
2. Open the app and go to Settings.
3. Tap Account.
4. Select Username.
It literally takes just a few seconds. Once you pick and reserve your username, it’s saved for when the feature goes live.
Why This Matters (Especially for Everyday Users)
- More privacy: Share your username on social media, business cards, posters, or public groups without exposing your real number.
- Better for business: Entrepreneurs, freelancers, and startups (like many here in Uganda) can promote a professional contact point without mixing personal and work life.
- Safer connections: Great for online communities, dating, buying/selling on marketplaces, or joining new groups.
- Less spam: Fewer random people who got your number from somewhere can reach you.
This is one of those quiet but powerful updates that makes WhatsApp feel more modern and user-friendly — especially in places where mobile numbers are tied to everything from mobile money to official services.
What Should You Do Today?
If you have a name you like, reserve it now before someone else grabs it. Think about something memorable, easy to spell, and related to you or your brand.
WhatsApp has been slowly moving toward more privacy-focused tools, and usernames are a big step in the right direction. It shows they’re listening to users who want to stay connected without handing over personal details.
Have you reserved yours yet? Drop your future @username in the comments if you want (just don’t share your real number 😉).
Welcome to the next chapter of WhatsApp!
